Question about HTC Touch battery life, WM7 update and Google "GPS"
Jan 7 2008, 11:28 PM EST
I have had the Bell touch for about a week. I have been using the unlimited mobile browser a lot combined with normal incoming and out going calls. My battery drains down to 20% after having it on for eight hours at work. Is this normal?

This is my first Windows Mobile phone. I read some posts at CES about the WM6.1 update coming out soon and eventually the new WM7 in early 2008. My question is will Touch users have the opportunity to update to the WM7 version and newer versions in the future? Or do we just get the supplementary and service pack updates? Do we pay for the updates or are the free?

Google maps "My Location" doesn't work on my phone. I keep getting the same messgae "Your current location is temporarily unavailable". My GPS is set to the ON position.
Does yours work?

Thanks

Some responses to your questions:

1. The battery drain sounds a bout right for 8 hours. I use my AT&T Tilt heavily during the day and get down to about 60% when I get home. That's with 1 hour of music, emails, some Internet and random phone calls. The other thing I do is just leave it plugged in at work while I am at my desk. It's actually better for the batteries.

2. As far as WM updates, it's up to the cellular carriers to determine whether or not they will ofer the upgrades. Microsoft releases them, but not all phones get them. As for WM7, if they are truly using the gestures features, such as moving the phone, I am not sure if the current crop of phones can make use of them. We'll just have to wait and see. As for costs, most of the time, the updates are available for free.

3. As for Google, the HTC Touch does not have GPS activated on the phone. I believe it's built into the chipset, but the firmware does not have it activated. The only way to use GPS on the Touch at this time is to get a separate bluetooth GPS receiver. The My Location feature though, should have worked on the cellular network though. Not sure if it works in Canada though.

You problem with google maps is easy to fix. You need to "Unlock" your phone. The process is called software unlock. Please google it, and you will find third party software that will let you do that. 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Bell Mobility is a CDMA carrier, therefore I don't think unlocking will do much good.
The GPS on the CDMA touch is not yet enabled. Rumors are that Sprint is going to have an update for the phone to enable it by the end of the half. No idea about other carriers. Most likely once the first carrier releases an update to enable Rev.A and GPS, people will hack it to work on other CDMA network Touch's.

Well there are two types of unlocking on WM devices, SIM unlocking, which I think you are talking about, and CID unlocking, which allows you to flash new ROMs onto your phones. So there could be some use to the CID unlock, such as putting on new ROMs. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find one that lets you enable the GPS. Do you find this valuable?
