They have you pay 29.99 for internet on the MDA then charge you for text messaging fees. T-Mobile is full of crap! They don't charge an IM fee for the sidekick. If you have internet service at home IM isnt billed so why does t-mobile charge and why only for certain phones. That is ridiculous!! Quote and Reply Post a Reply 1  out of 1 found this valuable. They don't charge for the sidekick because the internet plan for the sidekick includes unlimited text messaging. That's why you don't get charged for the IM on the sidekick Quote and Reply Post a Reply Do you find this valuable?

Thanks for the object lesson in tautology.

There is no technical reason for T-Mob to charge per-message rates for IM; IM takes up very little bandwidth (especially compared to latency-sensitive high-throughput apps like streaming audio and video), and routing IMs through SMS is simply adding an extra layer of complexity on top of the protocol.

Of course, crippling their enterprise smartphones by shutting down arbitrary ports and connections would be a *very* bad idea, so the IM/SMS fee is really just an "inexperienced user tax."
