Announced on March 1, 2015 at MWC together with Valve, with pre-orders from February 29, 2016 and shipments from April 5, 2016 at $799. The first consumer VR system with true room-scale: two OLED displays at 1080×1200 per eye at 90 Hz, a field of view of about 110°, and SteamVR Lighthouse tracking, where two base stations with laser sweeps provide sub-millimeter accuracy over an area of up to 4.5×4.5 m (later 10×10 m with 2.0). It came with two wireless controllers with trackpads and triggers, a front-facing camera for viewing the real world, the Chaperone system (virtual walls) and Vive Phone Services (phone notifications). Weight 555 g, with a 3-in-1 cable (HDMI, USB, power) via a Link Box. It requires a PC with a GTX 970 / R9 290. About 420,000 units were sold in 2016, making it a leader in premium PC VR alongside the Oculus Rift. The price was cut to $599 in 2017 and $499 in 2018. Accessories: the Deluxe Audio Strap (2017), Vive Tracker and Wireless Adapter (2018). The Vive Business Edition ($1,200) came with a commercial license. Production ended in 2020, and the Vive Cosmos Elite took over its niche.
