January 12, 2017. The first phone of the new U series and the debut of the "Liquid Surface" glass design (iridescent Sapphire Blue, Brilliant Black, Ice White, Cosmetic Pink). A 5.7" QHD Super LCD5 plus a second 2.05" 160×1040 display above the main one (notifications, shortcuts, contacts, as on the LG V20), a Snapdragon 821 (already dated at launch), 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB plus microSD (128 GB in the sapphire version), a 12 MP UltraPixel 2 camera with OIS and laser/phase-detection AF, a 16 MP front camera with an UltraPixel mode, BoomSound Hi-Fi, USonic headphones over USB-C with hearing profiling, no 3.5 mm jack, a 3000 mAh battery, 170 g, HTC Sense Companion (an AI assistant) and 4 microphones with always-on recognition. Android 7.0 → 8.0. The $749 price and large body drew a storm of criticism; sales were a failure.
