P3400 display in keypad mode is very dull (low contrast)

I have an HTC Touch and have recently purchased a P3400 for my son. I find that the display is very dull especially in the area where the number comes up (light grey background with white font). Is tehre a way to brighten this up, make it like that of the touch wihich has nuice colours (black, blue) so that things are easier to read.

I managed to get the background files and eit them using MSPaint, but am unable to put them back as the files on the phone are "Read Only". Does anyone know how to remove teh "Read Only" flag?
