I have ActiveSync 4.2 and was on this problem for many hours before I solved it. Here're some tips:
1. Try a different COM port in the Bluetooth advanced configuration.
2. Try renaming the "Bluetooth Serial Port" in Local services in Bluetooth configuration to "ActiveSync". Make sure that the COM port number matches what you've configured in the connection settings under ActiveSync software.
3. Delete the existing partnership from the phone. To do this tough and hold the name of the PC on the mobile device under bluetooth devices settings and when a menu appears, select delete. Now start fresh by going to activesync on the device and choosing "Connect via Bluetooth". Create a new partnership from scratch. This time hopefully you will see the ActiveSync service and the partnership would be recognized by ActiveSync.

HTC Touch HD: went through steps but neither COM port 3 or 4 were working. Tried COM port 0 on a whim and it worked. Give it a go if you hit the same problem. Don't know why this works as it's definitely not set as 0 for ActiveSync, or Bluetooth ActiveSynch or Bluetooth Serial Port

On the device:
Select Start, ActiveSync, Menu, **Connect via Bluetooth**. Look closely, I had the same problem but was skipping this part.

Hallo all,
I have tried this procedure with no efect. I am able to explore my HTC Cruise from desktop (via bluetooth), but I can not use an activesync nor internet connection of my desktop from the HTC. Prartneship was established, FTP works, hendsfree works... On my desktop I have WXP with SP3 and HP Integrated module with Bluetooth 2.0 (vendor Broadcom). Does anybody know where is a problem ? I gues somethink is wrong with desktop SW (maybe SP3 is the keypoint). Please respond directly to my e-mail: zxm@seznam.cz or ICQ:154287632. Thanks in advance.

"Hi - The destructions explicity mention Service Pack 2 compatibility - I see you have SP3 - could this be the issue? MW"
You cannot sync using wifi or bluetooth, too much information can be intercepted from the "airways". It is a Microsoft security measure.

Very good information, It did not work at first, I was not getting activesync service listed but after removing the devices and rescaning the devices and pairing again things looked good.
Thanks

"Okay along this line. I just got the Tmobile shadow. I have heard that I can't install active sync with vista. What now? I can't even sync using bluetooth just usb and that just sucks. Any ideas?"
You're right, you have to install Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1. Fortunately, WMDC does support syncing through Bluetooth. You can download it here:
