Screen is Dark...

Does anyone have a problem with the light on their HTC Touch? one day I was just walking.. and all of a sudden the screen on my phone went really dark, and I cannot see anything on my phone in the day light, unless i am in a shaded area.. I do not know how to resolve this issue, or is this an uncommon issue?

You have turned up the setting for the backlight right?
Have to start with the obvious and go from there.
