Cingular 8525 and TomTom GPS
Dec 10 2006, 2:06 PM EST
Success! Despite TomTom support not being prepared to say whether TomTom will work on the Cingular 8525, (because they haven't tested it themselves in house) , I have successfully loaded TomTom Navigator 6 onto my Cingular 8525.
The Cingular 8525 successfully pairs with the old TomTom private-labelled Bluetooth GPS receiver that I have. And the software works fine with that.
There is a problem though, the Cingular 8525 bluetooth does not seem to be able to successfully pair with the new iBlue 737 (a newer and higher spec model with much better battery life due to auto-off functionality).
Can htc or Cingular or anyone out there give some advice on how to get the bluetooth on the Cingular 8525 to pair with the iBlue? Is there generally a problem with the Cingular 8525 Bluetooth?
My girlfriend's Palm 650 phone's bluetooth phone recognized the iBlue immediately, and was able to pair right away. So it is not the receiver, it's either something up with the way I tried to set up the pairing, or something up with the bluetooth functionality of the phone itself... .

OK, well good news, I have got the iBlue to successfully set up a partnership between the 8525 and the iBlue 737, they are both blue-toothing now perfectly!
I had to manually type in the name of the iBlue 737 device ("iBT-GPS") when I clicked "new partnership" in the Bluetooth "Devices" tab.
Then I had to check the Serial Port. Finally I had to select the COM0 port for the iBT-GPS in the "COM Ports" tab.

(The first time I went through this process, the COM Ports tab listed "COM0", but the bluetooth wasn't synching. However I figured out how to delete the "iBT-GPS" from the Bluetooth new partnership page (click and hold down on the listed device, and click delete), and deleted the original COM Port entry (same approach), powered down the phone and then re-entered everything. This time the 8525 found the iBT-GPS automatically, and when I entered the COM0 port, it showed alongside the iBT-GPS. This was the only noticeable change from the way I'd entered it the first time.
When I went into TomTom, I clicked "I agree", and then (instead of going into preferences, selecting "GPS Status" and "Configure" and selecting "Other Bluetooth GPS Receiver" to select the device type,) I just waited at the first page and TomTom found the bluetooth signal after a while. It's worked fine ever since.

I found it very hard to get any details about the spec of the TomTom Bluetooth Receiver. The original model that my girlfriend had ran down the battery to a state that ended up not keeping the charge.
Unfortunately TomTom do not provide any technical details about the receiver that they offer with their PDA - TomTom Navigator 6 software. So it is hard to tell whether it is a good device or not. For example I could neither tell how many simultaneous satellites it tracked (channels), and accuracy metric, nor could I tell whether they had improved the power management of their new reiver that they promote on their site. Without any information it is hard to tell the merrits of their new receiver.

In contrast, Semsons (http://www.semsons.com/tona5usawiih.html
) provides very detailed specs on all of the bluetooth receivers that they retail. The new iBlue 737 has a number of features that set it ahead of the rest of the field, most notably a large number of channels, very rapid bluetooth synch when both devices are turned on, high accuracy (within x meters) and very helpful, a ´power management` approach that automatically sets the device to standby if it is not being used, and comes back on if there is a resumption of bluetooth activity.

My experience so far with the iBlue has been very good. I have had other comments back that other 8525 users managed to get the 8525 and iBlue to synch right away without any problems. So I would encourage any readers to give it a shot. Although you can't return the TomTom software, you could return the receiver if you could't get it working.

Thank you for your post. Can you advise how much program memory (i.e., internal device memory not memory on an expansion card) was required by TomTom 6? Thanks. Do you find this valuable?

I'm new to my 8525 and to GPS receivers. There seems to be a lot of options as to whether you use the gps receiver that comes with a tom tom or something else. Can you give a gps/tomtom/8525 newbie a brief explanation as to what you need to make this work? Thanks! Do you find this valuable?

What you need is
1) GPS software that will work on Microsoft Windows Mobile 5,
2) a microSD card large enough to hold the GPS maps you want to use
3) a bluetooth receiver.

Other posters can coment on any other software-bluetooth recievers that they've got working.
I can confirm I've got TomTom Navigator 6 software (ordered the version on the DVD)
With a 2GB MicroSD card (more expensive than the 1GB, but holds lots of maps with room to spare. You could get away with a 1GB card, but may need to move maps onto and off the 1GB depending on how far you travel. If you typically go around your state or a group of states, that should be fine - if you range far and wide - it's nice to not have to change maps often)
I'm using the iBlue 737 bluetooth GPS reciever.
This combo is working very well for me.
The 8525 has a 4Ghz chip that helps performance versus the earlier models.
Hope that helps.

RE: Cingular 8525 and IGuidance V3
Jan 24 2007, 1:47 PM EST
I just purchased a GlobalSat BT359W bluetooth GPS unit for my 8525 and installed IGuidance V3--it works like a charm! (I also have a 2GB micro for storage--with all of those POI's it takes about 1GB for the data for US maps.) IGuidance was recommended to me for US maps as they provide more streets/data/POI's than TomTom Navigator 6, as IGuidance is an American Company and TomTom a European Company--TomTom is better for Europe... They use NavTech mapping (as opposed to TomTom's TeleAtlas) which is more highly rated overall as well. I chose the GlobalSat BT359W because it has the Sirf III technology (you don't have to have direct view to the sky among other things) who also makes the TomTom and Cingular BlueTooth GPS units.
I have not had any problems with this setup or use... Although I did have to finagle the COM ports upon installation... I had to use COM 4 and then manually configure the IGuidance software to COM 4, and the GPS Info software (which comes with the GPS) to COM 4... Took awhile to figure it all out, but not too bad.
Good luck...

One more thing... TomTom requires you to register your software to ONE device only. IGuidance allows you to use it on multiple devices (ie laptop, other PDA's). My husband installed it on his laptop (which has GPS as well), and if/when my kids get PDA's that are compatible, I am allowed to put the software on theirs, too.
This was a big plus to my family... Oh, and it's cheaper! :)

RE: Cingular 8525 and TomTom GPS

I've opened up my Cingular 8525 and the "Settings" "System" "Memory" utility shows memory info for "Main" hardware memory, "Storage Card" and "Running Programs".
Main Memory Stats are broken down into Storage and Program.
With only TomTom Navigator open the "Main" memory stats are as follows:

"Main" Program memory stats with TomTom active:
Total: 49.08MB
In use: 33.96 MB
Free: 15.12 MB

"Main" Program memory stats with TomTom turned off:
Total: 49.08MB
In use: 28.49 MB
Free: 20.59 MB

So it looks like the program is using 5.47 MB of Main system memory.

To give you the complete picture, "Main" Storage Memory stats With TomTom turned on:
Total: 56.22 MB
In use: 22.55 MB
Free: 33.67 MB

"Main" Storage Memory stats with TomTom turned off:
Total: 56.22 MB
In use: 22.49 MB
Free: 33.73 MB

"Storage Card" Memory Stats are:
Total storage card memory: 1936.88 MB (I bought a 2 GB Micro SD Card)
In use: 550.04 MB
Free: 1386.84 MB
the Storage card stats stay the same whether TomTom's on or off.

Hi All,

I am so glad that I found this forum. I just got my cinguar 8525 and was trying to configure it with TomTom Navigator 5 GPS and software. The same TomTom GPS and software worked no problem at all with my Old Treo 650 but on cingular 8525, everytime I tried to navigate to a location the software will just crash and return to Today's screen. If I use advanced planning to navigate between two pre-configured locations. Then I turn on the GPS receiver after the software already figured out the routes, then everything will work as long as I don't navigate to any new places while the GPS was connected.

Anyone has similar problem as mine? I will try to configure TomTom GPS receiver as "Other Bluetooth Receiver" and configure it as a serial port device on COM0. If this stll don't work then I am really out of luck.

I have Tom Tom Navigator 6 with a GlobalSat BT359W running on my 8525 with no problems. I love the Tom Tom software, ran it on my Treo 650 before upgrading to the 8525. I read all these comments and even looked at all the screen shots of the iNavigator program before I decided to buy TT6, but I just couldn't give up Tom Tom for iNavigatory. Tom Tom is easy to use, and I have never had a problem with it. I only run it on one device, so I saw no benefit to switching to iNavigator. Long live Tom Tom! Do you find this valuable?

I just returned my Cingular 8525 to Cingular after the screen went kaput. They shipped me a replacement handset within 24 hours which was great (although they stipulate that they can charge me $400 if the returned unit was found to have water damage or physical damage - which it did not have.)

I was concerned that I would have problems activating the maps of the TomTom Navigator 6 software on the new handset, since it was registered with the old handset's hardware identification number: but no problem - the software application installed as soon as I inserted the Micro SD card in the new handset; and after I had gone through the process of getting a new activation code for TomTom Navigator 6 (by going to TomTom's web site and entering the new handset's hadware identification number and the software's reference number to get the new activation code) I was able to activate the maps without any problem.

So I'm still a Tom Tom fan also!

It is good to hear that other GPS Software can be installed smoothly on the 8525.

Sounds strange. TomTom version 6 is working fine for me wiht my 8525. Although I do have to reboot MS Windows every now and then, for TomTom or other applications to work.
If the problem continues, you may want to pay TomTom to upgrade to Navigator 6 (they have a reduced cost for upgrade on their web site), and see if that fixes the problem.
The other thing is to make sure you've re-booted your 8525 if you have problems - it is Windows Operating system after all - the Palms OS is much less suseptible to 'freezing' etc.
The other thing to check is you've got a big enough Micro SD card...
Failing that - you could try a de-install and re-install of the software... Let us know if you fix the problem and how.

OK! this string just solved my problem, after installing the tomtom on the 8525 with latest rom update (may,2007) i could not get the handsfree in my car to work again. BUT to fix i deleted handsfree from the paired device list (as instructed abouve, hold down on the device and a delete option appears) and then re-paired and..... walla, it works! of course i had previously tried re-pairing with the original device still listed but that didnt work.
