Large Keyboard?

I cannot get the "large" keyboard to regularly appear when I want to type text. The large XT9 2 letter keyboard shows up more often than not. Does anyone know how to override that keyboard for the larger single character keyboard? Or is this an update fix that HTC needs to issue? How do you get that request so that tech support will take notice?
