iMate JAMin

(a.k.a. Qtek S200, Dopod 818 Pro and Orange SPV M600)

imate JAMinThe iMate JAMin is a compact formfactor device that includes both phone and PDA functions in one. Combined with a 2MP camera, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GSM/GPRS/EDGE, this Windows Mobile 5.0 device provides all necessary features for both business and personal use.

The box contains the iMate JAMin, battery, battery cover, charger adapter, pouch with belt clip, headset/microphone, software CD, and USB charge/synchronization cable.

The iMate JAMin contains 128MB available in its ROM and 64MB available in its RAM. A standard-sized SD slot is provided, which may be used to expand the storage capacity of the device.

The JAMin's processor is a dual-core 200MHz OMAP processor factory set at 180MHz. The processor provides an adequate mix of battery conservation and response to user and application requests. This is possibly one area where a future version of the JAMin could be improved on. Due to the power consumption requirements of the GSM phone, Bluetooth and Wi-fi, together with the screen and running a mix of Windows Mobile applications, the processor had to be stepped down to ensure a reasonable charge - use - charge cycle. Overall, the JAMin provides an average of 48 hours of use from its 1200mAh Lithium-Ion battery. That is a real-world and experiental measurement, utilizing push E-mail, GSM phone calls, Bluetooth headset connection and data entry. Obviously, the battery life is dependent on the level of utilization of the various components and the applications loaded.

The battery may be charged using the supplied power adapter or by connecting it to the USB port of a computer.

The screen resolution is 240 x 320, which provides a clear-enough display for reading and entering text. With Windows Mobile 5.0, the screen orientation may be changed from portrait to landscape mode, which provides additional screen real estate for certain applications. This is particularly useful for web browsing and watching videos.

Data entry on the Prophet is handled via the touch-sensitive display and intergrated stylus pen. There is no hardware keyboard, but most infrared or Bluetooth capable keyboards with the requisite driver support for Windows Mobile 5.0 can be used. The lack of physical keyboard has enabled the JAMin's small size. Common functions can be executed using the hardware buttons, which are mapped to applications and options.

The GSM phone is a quad-band device, offering GSM, GPRS and EDGE support. By voice-tagging contacts, the phone may be operated without physical interaction. Overall, the quality of the voice recognition is excellent. The JAMins loudspeaker enables the phone to be used in speakerphone mode, however, audio input/output quality is not always adequate. Playback of audio files is best done using the supplied headset, or through a third party 2.5mm to 3.5mm JAMIn/JAM-only headphone adaptor.

The WIndows Mobile 5.0 operating system is pre-installed and provides customization for country-specific mobile phone operators once the device is switched on for the first time. It is recommended that the latest operating system patch be installed, as older versions of the operating system release for the JAMin do not include the enhanced Connection Manager (this is required to enable push E-mail from an Exchange 2003 server). Upon switch-on, the user's mobile phone operator needs to be selected. This automatically sets all necessary data profiles and other settings, making the device immediately ready for use. The Windows Mobile 5.0 version includes Outlook Mobile, Word Mobile, Excel Mobile and Powerpoint Mobile. Data synchronization from a server or PC is possible utilizing Activesync 4.0. MSN Messenger, Windows Media Player, Internet Explorer Mobile, PDF viewer and the usual utility software is included.

The 2MP camera on the JAMin is usable, but should be used only where image quality is not too big an issue. A setting on the lens itself provides macro capabilities. The built-in camera software permits various settings and shot modes to be selected. Depending on the amount of available storage, the camera may be used as a camcorder.

One disappointment is the inclusion of a 2.5mm headphone jack instead of the industry-standard 3.5mm jack. This requires a seperate (specialised) adapter to be purchased. 3G would have been a great feature, but was probably omitted due to the already heavy power consumption.

A2DP (Stereo Bluetooth) headsets are not natively supported by the device yet, however, third party registry and system patches have been successful in providing full A2DP functionality, with some reports of poor sound quality on certain headsets and adaptors. The iTech R.35, Plantronics 950 and HT820 have been the most successful in testing, although there have been some complaints for all models. The iTech R.35 also comes with its own specialised software, which provides perfect sound quality due to a specialised MP3 decoder in the iTech unit.

Here are some of the main features of iMate JAMin. Please add more fun features that you've used.
